2018 USAR Challenge


Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) is one of the newer but equally exciting aspects of the UKRO Challenege to watch and take part in. 

A series of complex scenarios will see all teams competing throughout the two days and is the one of the more physically challenging elements of UKRO 2018.

There will be a range of technical aspects that teams will have to display.Each element will take 90 minutes and are the longest of all the rotations in the Challenge.  Teams will consist of six operators which will include a Team Leader and Team Medic.

The venue in the centre of Cardiff is well configured for spectators to see the teams from across the United Kingdom going head to head and the scenarios are based on those situations USAR teams could face themselves with anywhere in the UK.

USAR Challenge Time Table

 

Breaching & Breaking

This scenario will test team’s effectiveness to Breach through various materials utilising appropriate methods and tools to search for a casualty. Once located, the casualties injuries must be assessed and treated where required, the casualty will then require retrieval out of the structure to safety.




Lifting and Moving

Teams will have 90 minutes to calculate the weight of a concrete slab and move the slab a distance of approximately 10m negotiating an obstacle which the slab has to pass over safely and under control. Teams will be provided with various pieces of equipment to achieve the task.




Shoring

This scenario will Test the team’s ability to carry out a shoring size up to enable the construction of the correct shoring system in timber, to support damaged bridge supports so that the bridge can be reopened to allow access to emergency vehicles. Teams will have 90 minutes to assess the Bridge, set up equipment and construct the shores.




 Technical Search

This has been designed to test the Teams ability map a void from various access points utilising search cameras provided, The team will have 90 minutes to complete the scenario, crews will firstly have to assess and make safe hazards that could hinder their progress, this will involve the use of hot cutting equipment and employing the correct cuts and procedures to isolate the hazards. Once the Hazards have been dealt with the team will have their remaining time to Map the void as effectively as possible noting all relevant information required for the next stage of the Rescue.
